A recent burglary at the lake has prompted the following:

A program that may benefit a lot of seasonal owners is called the "Posted Property Program". The property owner sends a letter to the NYS Police (Maj. Kevin Molinari, Troop Commander, Route 7, Box 300, Sidney, NY 13380) requesting participation in the program, listing when the property is closed up for the season and when it will be reopened the following year and a contact name/phone number locally. The police will post a large yellow sign on the property that says "Posted and Patrolled by NYS Police" and will regularly patrol the property and neighborhood. At the end of the season, or upon the return of the owner, the police will remove the posted sign. Might be of use for those who are only at the lake during the summer for greater peace of mind. For more information, a Sgt Segit of the NYS Police can be reached directly at 607-432-3212.

The correct number to report a suspicious activity to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Dept. would be 607-547-4273 and that will get you the dispatchers. If it is an in progress emergency the dispatcher will send the closest car to that location. It will be a state police car or sheriff car. The sheriff’s department also does property checks on seasonal properties but they don’t have the large signs. Just send the same information into the Otsego Co Sheriff Dept at 172 Co Hwy 33W, Cooperstown, NY 13326 or call the number listed above. Give them the date you will be leaving and when you will be returning. If you have anyone local that will be checking on the house give them that contact info as well. Any number that you can be reached in an emergency will be helpful as well.

If a few seasonal property owners called in to both the state police and sheriff’s department to have properties checked – they might be there more often. Make your voice heard.
